Walk in God’s Light

Jennifer Peterson
Stake Relief Society President

As we keep our focus on those things that invite us to do good, we will be walking in God’s light and be examples to those around us.

While vacationing in Utah many years ago, my family and I climbed up to Timpanogos Cave and took a tour.  At one point on the tour, the guide had all of us turn off our flashlights.  I have never experienced darkness quite like that!  You could not see anything - not even if you put your hand in front of your face.

Fortunately we were not forced to remain in the darkness for long.  When the guide invited us to turn on our flashlights again, it was interesting to see how with each light that came on more darkness receded.

We live in a world where there is “darkness” all around us.  Each day as we make choices to keep the commandments, serve others and follow Christ’s example, we are charging our light so that we can repel the darkness.

President Henry B. Eyring said the following in a talk titled “Walk in the Light” in April 2008:

“Every child of Heavenly Father born in the world is given at birth, as a free gift, the Light of Christ. You have felt that. It is the sense of what is right and what is wrong and what is true and what is false. That has been with you since your journey in life began.”

“You make choices every day and almost every hour that keep you walking in the light or moving away toward darkness. Some of the most important choices are about what you set your heart upon.”

How do we know what we should set our hearts upon?  Mormon gave this counsel to his son Moroni found in Moroni 7:13:

But behold, that which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God.

As we keep our focus on those things that invite us to do good, we will be walking in God’s light and be examples to those around us.
